Pre-school medical examination

In Thuringia, the pre-school medical examination is, as a rule, carried out only by doctors from the Paediatric and Adolescent Health Service of the public health authorities. All children starting school who have their main residence in Jena are examined.

Please allow at least 90 minutes for the examination.

The pre-school medical examination is carried out to assess your child’s physical, emotional and mental development.

Key areas of the examination

  • examination of the sensory organs (visual acuity and hearing)
  • measuring height and weight
  • Physical examination
  • assessment of motor skills and speech
  • Assessment of other areas of development relevant to schooling
  • Observation of social maturity and behaviour
  • Checking vaccination status and providing vaccination advice

Following the examination, the Paediatric and Adolescent Health Service will discuss with you any recommendations that are important for your child’s successful start at school, draw these up for the school’s attention and, with your consent, inform the school.

The school entry assessments for the 2027/2028 school year will begin in mid-November 2026 and will run until the end of April 2027. Children who were deferred from starting school in the 2026/2027 school year must also undergo a further assessment.
