School enrollment examination
In Thuringia, school enrolment examinations are only carried out by doctors from the paediatric and youth medical service of the health authorities. All children starting school who have their main place of residence in Jena are examined.
Ablauf der Einschulungsuntersuchung
Please allow at least 90 minutes for the examination.
The school enrolment examination is carried out to assess your child's physical, emotional and mental development.
Focal points of the examination
- Testing the sensory organs (visual acuity and hearing)
- Measurement of height and body weight
- Physical examination
- Assessment of physical motor skills and speech
- Assessment of other areas of development relevant to school
- Observation of social maturity and behavior
- assessment of vaccination status and vaccination advice
As a result of the examination, the pediatric and adolescent medical service will discuss recommendations with you that are important for your child's successful school attendance, formulate them for forwarding to the school and, with your consent, inform the school.

Dates for children starting school in 2026/2027
For all children who are due to start school in 2026, appointments can be bookedin our online calendar until the end of April 2026 . These appointments can be rebooked independently if you are unable to attend, for example due to illness.
Until May 15, 2026, you can only make an appointment by telephone on 0049 3641 49-3282 (Monday to Thursday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.) or by e-mail to einschulungsuntersuchung@jena.de (with a callback number) .

Information for children starting school in 2027/2028
The school enrolment examinations are expected to begin in December 2026. You will receive information on this website, in the press and on social media from November 2026.

- Forms - please print out all questionnaires, fill them in and bring them with you to the appointment
- Template drawing of a person - your child draws a person (e.g. themselves) on this sheet at home and completes the sample edge. Please also bring this picture to the appointment.
Note: If you do not have a printer, the forms are also available for you on site.

Parent survey on child health 2026 - voluntary and anonymous
We also ask you to complete a parent survey on child health. All information is voluntary. It is important to the Health Department to gain an overall picture of the health situation of children in Jena. You can find the parent survey on child health 2026 under -> Links.
